A Residential Course for
Collaborative Arts Practice in Góis, Portugal
August 1-12, 2018
An intensive residential course in Góis, Portugal, bringing together visual artists and musicians to work collaboratively over ten days, creating new works combining photography, moving image, music, and sound art.
Summer 2018 witnessed 17 musicians and visual artists from around the world meeting in rural Portugal to explore cross-arts creative practice. To facilitate the process, we brought in two amazing artists and teachers, Filipe Sousa and Beatriz Martinez. Over the course of 10 days, we journeyed through a range of activities to fuel the creative mind, including movement classes, silent walks, theatre games, fieldtrips to surrounding villages, swimming in the gorge, meals by the river, late night dancing, and lots and lots of making. The residency culminated in a fully immersive promenade performance through the old school in Gois, involving installation works, live performance, video art, and participatory elements. But perhaps more importantly, it led to the creation of a tightly knit community of artists who all felt enabled and encouraged to take risks in growing their practice, together. Thank you to everyone who participated and everyone who made it possible!

The residency was life-changing, life-affirming, and simply wonderful from beginning to end. The participants have become like family to me and that is due to the trust and love we have developed through exercises and time shared together. The period was intense and energizing, each moment a source of inspiration waiting to mature into something extraordinary. I have grown so much as an artist and a person and the experience has built an incredible community of people around me whom I hope to treasure for the rest of my life.
